Know your skin with Sonas
Generally, we can single out five basic skin types: normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive, with each having particular characteristics and requiring specific care and/or treatment.
To determine your type, use a simple test with a clean facial tissue (or paper) to wipe your face in the morning, when you have just woken up:
Acne
The frequency and severity of acne and breakouts in adults can be dramatically influenced by stress levels, diet, and the use of acnegenic cosmetics.

Clinical studies indicate between 40 and 55 percent of the adult population in the 20 to 40 age group has been diagnosed with low grade, persistent acne and oily skin, with the primary catalyst identified
as chronic stress
MediBac Clearing™ is Dermalogica’s answer to the adult acne epidemic. To learn more about this twenty-four hour treatment system formulated specifically to treat, clear and prevent adult acne, visit your Dermalogica professional skin therapist for your Face Mapping® skin analysis and customised product prescription.

Combination
If you skin is combination, like that of most people, the tissue will have traces of oil coming from your nose and forehead, but will be clean in the areas that touched your cheeks.
Combination skin has patches of both dry and oily skin, and it requires different types of care in relation to particular facial areas.
Dry zones, which are usually located on the cheeks and around the eyes, should be treated with rich creams and moisturisers, while oily areas, usually on the forehead and nose, will benefit from a lightweight moisturiser and regular exfoliation.

Oily
If you have oily skin, the paper will have spots of facial oil on it, corresponding to the areas of your cheeks, nose, and forehead.
Oily skin is problematic – it usually looks greasy, thick, coarse, and shiny, has enlarged pores, and tends to suffer from occasional break outs.
A good thing, though, is that oily skin is not prone much to aging and wrinkling. Careful cleaning, minimizing of carbohydrate consumption, and avoiding rich creams can be helpful in improving the quality of oily skin.

Normal
If you skin belongs to a normal type, the tissue will not reveal any traces of oil. Your skin should feel vibrant, elastic, and supple. Normal skin is the least problematic type.

It looks clean and smooth and has a good circulation and healthy complexion. And with care, it will look good well into your advanced age.

Sensitive
Sensitive skin is usually very dry, tends to feel tight, and becomes inflamed and irritated easily. A true sensitive skin condition is caused by a genetic predisposition, commonly found in those who have very fair skin and usually of Northern European ancestry. This could be caused by the lower amount of pigment and a thinner epidermal skin layer (the epidermal layer is the top layer of skin we can see).
Sensitised skin can affect any person of any racial background or skin colour.

Symptoms for sensitive and sensitised skin do have a lot in common (itching, burning, redness, flushing and stinging), but in many cases, sensitised skin can’t be seen by the naked eye, as it resides much deeper. And, our microclimate, or the climate we are exposed to in our home, cars, offices and during air travel, changes daily; meaning our level of sensitization can vary.

Dry
If your skin is dry, the paper will be clean, too, but your face skin will feel flaky, dry, and tight after you have wiped it.
Dry skin can easily develop a sallow tone, wrinkles, and fine pores, and it is very prone to aging and irritating. While there are many triggers, one of the biggest consequences of dry skin is an increase in sensitivity. Dry skin is a precursor to sensitized skin because when skin is dry, it’s depleted of its natural protective lipid barrier. This lowers skin’s defenses against environmental assaults that can cause a sensitized reaction in skin, such as itching and redness.
For proper treatment of a dry and sensitized skin condition, speak to a professional skin therapist.

Shave
Shaving-related irritation can exhibit a number of symptoms, including redness, inflammation and ingrown hairs.
Ingrown hairs, also known as Pseudofolliculitis barbae, manifest on skin when hair is cut, and the hair grows back in at an improper angle. The process of cutting the end of the hair shaft through shaving can force hair back into its follicle, or even cause hair to double over on itself, re-entering the same follicle and growing inward instead of exiting the surface. The hair shaft can also grow and enter another follicle.
The body recognises this ingrown hair as a foreign body (similar to a splinter), and triggers an inflammatory response that includes redness, itchiness and a raised area that resembles a pimple that can fill with pus.
Besides having facial hair, there are structural differences between a man’s skin and a woman’s. Androgen (testosterone) stimulation causes an increase in skin thickness, which accounts for why a man’s skin is about 25% thicker than a woman’s. In addition to being thicker, a man’s skin texture is tougher.

Premature Ageing
Exfoliation is critical to minimize the signs of skin aging. However, excessive exfoliation can lead to inflammation, a known precursor to skin aging.
Skin is an excellent record keeper. Every moment of exposure to daylight adds up like money in the bank – the problem is the payoff known as sun damage (also known as photo damage). As the top cause of premature signs of skin aging, sun damage shows on skin in the form of wrinkles and hyper pigmentation, and can lead to a repressed immune system and the potential for skin cancer.
Exfoliation helps remove dulling skin cells and preps skin for brightening treatments. However, it's important to not over-exfoliate, as this can cause inflammation, which is a precursor to sensitivity and skin aging.
An uneven skin tone, or hyper pigmentation, is the result of an over production of melanin. Melanin is what gives skin and hair its colour, helps protect skin against damaging UV light and absorbs heat from the sun. However, an overproduction of melanin stimulated by excessive sun exposure, hormones, or scarring, leads to a mottled, uneven skin tone. |
